The Use of Force by William Carlos Williams

When the doctor came, he acted very professional. He first asked the parents questions about Mathilda. After he asked the parents, he proceeded to ask Mathilda what her name is (Williams 555). Shortly after that he politely asks her to open her mouth so he can check and see if she her throat is swollen. He did not come in and grab Mathilda; he was very calm and kind about the whole process.
While the doctor is being as polite as possible to the little girl, she is being a pain and not cooperating with him. She would not tell him her name when he asked; she did not open her mouth when asked nicely. Even after her parents told her he would not hurt her she still would not open her mouth and let him look at it. When the parents used the word 'hurt', the doctor was upset with them. He knew that this would make Mathilda more upset and scared rather than helping him." If only they wouldn't use the word hurt I might be able to get somewhere." (Williams 555). When children hear words like this, they tend to think the worse of things. Mathilda even struck the doctor and knocked his glasses off when he got close enough to take a look. Even Mathilda's parents thought she was acting rudely towards the doctor. "You bad girl Look what you've done," (Williams 555). She was at an age where she was able to understand what was being told to her. She just did not want to listen or obey. When the doctor went to open her mouth she would start to scream hysterically. She kept closing her mouth and would not let the doctor put the tongue depressor in her mouth. However, once he did get the tongue depressor in her mouth, she bit down on it and destroyed it. As the doctor was looking at her throat, she began to grow more furious and causing the doctor to need more help holding her back while the examination went on. Mathilda's mother even thought she should be ashamed of what she did to the nice doctor trying to help her.
