Effects of Non-Verbal Communication


            The definition of non-verbal communication is, "Communication without the use of spoken language." Nonverbal communication includes gestures, facial expressions, and body positions (also known as "body language"), as well as unspoken understandings or some assumptions, and cultural conditions that may affect any encounter between people. People in the 20th century, and more frequently are starting to socialize and advertise online and on social media like Facebook. This is a form of nonverbal communication because it is not face-to-face and people can assume anything from the way something is phrased. Often offending people of other cultures, unknowingly, communicating through technology is not as effective as it should be between relationships, such as teachers, colleagues, friends, and family. Text messaging is not as effective as dialing a number and hearing a voice, full of emotion and life. Communication is key to any relationship and you have to communicate effectively face-to-face to get a point across without using gestures that are insulting. It is hard to argue emotion and reasoning into writing, it would take a lot of writing. Communicating emotion and thoughts effectively can be difficult for many, effecting our relationships in our everyday lives. Nonverbal cues can both negatively and positively impact the quality of our relationships depending on the situation and circumstances. .
             Your nonverbal communication can affect the messages you send, unknowingly to others around you, so collecting your thoughts before you speak is always important. Remember where you are, and who you are talking to when it comes to using insulting facial expressions and body language. Your bodily gestures can determine your thoughts or attitude of the moment and knowing when you shouldn't act careless. Social media and online chatting is ruining our means of face-to-face communication with one another as a society by taking distracting us from our everyday life task and others who want our attention.
