In my head I had some ideas but I couldn't effectively communicate them to the group.
Appropriateness is the ability to adhere to the behaviors that others expect of you in interpersonal communication (Comm1500 Workbook, 2015). I am exceptional at maintaining appropriateness in conversation because I understand that feeling comfortable is an essential part of opening up and being effective and I strive to achieve that skill. One time that I exemplified strong appropriateness was when I met my first professor at UGA. I said, "Good morning Dr.Saunt, I am very excited to be part of your class this semester, and I am looking forward to learning all about pre-Civil War American history," all while maintaining eye contact and making sure to shake his hand firmly. Since he was my elder and had authority over me, I made sure to be appropriate in showing my respect for him. Another example of appropriateness I exhibited was when I did the things my parents asked me to do and addressed them as ma'am or sir. In the culture I live in, it would be considered inappropriate to not address them in that manner. My parents said, "Hey Luke, we need you to mow the lawn before you go to Harrison's house," and I responded with, "Yes ma'am, I'll make sure I get it done".
A dimension of competency that I scored relatively high on was conversational involvement. Conversational involvement is the ability to become involved and integrated in the conversation through the use of verbal and non-verbal communication (Comm1500 Workbook, 2015). I have high conversational involvement because I am extraverted and tend to have a desire to fit in or be part of the conversation. An example of this was when my friends were talking about their favorite basketball teams and I voiced my opinion. One friend said, "I love the Spurs because of the legacy they've built over the years," and I joined in with, "Well their record definitely shows it.
