Barriers.
This section articulates the various hazards that have retarded the process of energy conservation. It also forms part of the problems, encountered while conducting the research on the effective energy consumption. It is important to note that this research study concentrated more on the use of the electricity among the university students as the main area of study (Michael et al 2014). At least in every students room there is a given unit consumption of energy. That is to say every room consumes energy whether the students are present or not. This is the sole source of the mayhem. .
The challenges that experienced by the university in monitoring the energy consumption is that they (the University management) do not have a firm energy consumption policy within the hostels and the university at large. Therefore, when every student irons using an electric box, cooks using an electric cooker, heat the rooms through electric room heaters, and take hot showers the electricity bill will be raise to abnormal levels. But this is a kind of act of irresponsibility.
The other challenge is that no student is ready to sacrifice either of those services at the expense of his own utility while the rest of the population carry on with the stated privileges. Besides, it doesn't require just the words of the mouth to set the students to consider turning lights and appliances off when not in use / not required.
Methodology (Defra 4E Applied Model for Behavioral Change).
In carrying out the research, the researcher applied the Defra 4E model to ascertain the cause of the existing unconducive environmental behaviors, and the proactive measure that can be adopted to combat the problem. The data were collected from a simple random sample of 100 students to represent the whole population of the university (July, Miriam & Billy, 2011). The sample was constituted of a random selection of at least 5 students from the 20 blocks of Hostels which accommodates the entire students population whose accommodation are catered for by the university.
