From China to Toronto, Canada

In "I'm a stranger here myself", the author Carey McWilliams states that the function of a state society is to help the newcomers in transition to their new lives by putting them together with people from the same state and thus easing their loneliness. McWilliams thinks that in a state society, people have more similarities and more topics to talk about. Their interactions will diminish their feeling of loneliness and unfamiliarities as "foreigners" in the society. Despite without a formal organization like the state society, Scarborough functioned the same way for me. Surrounded by a group of Chinese people, I felt like I was just at home and no longer feared by the unknown of this new environment.
Even though it feels like at home, a community with lots of foreign immigrants like Scarborough does not resemble a local community. Some people tried to get out of this zone, but their age and background limited their ability to do so. One day, I went to a restaurant for dinner in Scarborough and coincidently, the owner of the restaurant, Mr. Liu, came from the same city as I was. We had a conversation that inspired me a lot. He told me that he immigrated to Canada when he was almost forty years old. Although he had been there for fifteen years, he still felt that he was a foreigner and did not belong to there. "An alien, a stranger in a foreign city whose language was mysteriously her own." (Cain, 1933) Carey McWilliams uses this sentence to describe her mother, who has been lived in California for twenty years but "never felt at home in Los Angeles nor has she ever felt that she could like the place." (Cain, 1933) This sentence perfectly depicts Mr. Liu. He told me that he tried to make friends with local people and get into the local community, but it was impossible for him. McWilliams' mother lived in Colorado for decades and could not forget the beauty of her hometown.
