Second Language Acquisition


These beliefs are usually based on previously learned experiences and this is the best way for them to learn. This is another area where little work has been done.
             With exceptions it was noted that adults do not quickly learn a second language; they require attention, proficient learning and intense memorization of the second language. Adults often do not achieve grammar competence in their second language especially with regard to pronunciation making syntactic and morphological errors. Some people are very talented language learners but these are exceptions; mostly people are somewhere in the middle. Success of language acquisition depends upon age, talent and motivation. Age is significant factor in the second language acquisition. The younger the person he or she is the more quickly he or she will acquire the language. It is appropriate to say that second language acquisition decline with age. The sensitive period for acquiring phonology is the shortest. In order to acquire native-like pronunciation one must acquire the second language in childhood. Influence from the speaker's first language makes the second language acquisition appear different from the first language acquisition. .
             Many adult second language learners communicate very productively in the language even though they may differ in the accent, word choice or grammatical features which distinguish them from the native speakers and the second language speakers who began learning the language from a very young age. However it has been hypothesized that there is a critical period for learning a second language just as there is for first language acquisition. The Critical period Hypothesis states that there is a time in every human being's life when the brain is prone for accomplishment in the process of language learning. It is argued that the changes in the development of the brain affect the nature of the language learning process and the language acquisition that occurs after the end of the critical period may not be based on the biological structures but it is believed to contribute to the first language learning or the second language learning in the early childhood.
