Research Paper - Homelessness

These individuals can reunite with their loved ones or enter a foster home, shelter, etc. Others can experience "chronic" homelessness; these youth continually experience homelessness and can be in and out of homes on a more long-term basis. These youth usually have issues with finding food and shelter and can be on the street for long periods of time. Also, these youth can often be victimized and develop health issues as a result of failing to receive proper care. .
It is often suggested that alcohol and drugs are the reason many young people find themselves homeless. However, specific drug usage among homeless youth varies. Knowing this, Shelley Mallet, Doreen Rosenthal and Deborah Keys studied young people ages 12 to 20 years and documented their findings in Young people, drug use and family conflict: Pathways into homelessness. From their study, Mallet et al. noted that although drug use was prevalent among the youth studied, it was not a direct cause of homelessness. Family conflict in conjunction with drug use had the biggest correlation to homelessness. From the youth being studied, four categories emerged: 1) drug use that led to family conflicts and then to homelessness, 2) family conflicts that lead to drug use and then homelessness, 3) family conflicts that led to homelessness and then drug use and 4) a family member's drug use that led to family conflict and then homelessness (Mallet et al p 187 – 188).
For those belonging to group 1, it was indicated that drug use led directly to their homelessness (Mallet et al, 188). Although individual drug usage vary (e.g. pleasure, for independence and freedom, rebellion, etc.) it all causes issues with parents/guardians, ultimately leading youths to leave their home. For those belonging to group 2, drug/alcohol usage is a result of the youths' disaffection with their parents and/or stepparents (Mallet et al, 190). Some of them feel marginalized and alienated, if not victimized.
