Multiculturalism or Globalism


             Multiculturalism or Globalism, which should we teach our students? In order to answer that question we must first distinguish between multiculturalism and globalism. .
             Multiculturalism refers to the presence of many different cultures in the same environment, with each culture being given due recognition, where as globalism refers to developing knowledge and understanding of peoples and cultures of other lands, valuing both the diversity and commonalities of human experience (Ukpokodu, 1999). .
             I believe that educators need to be more aware of the cultures and traditions of other racial and ethnic backgrounds in their classrooms. I also believe that educators must also be more aware of diverse cultures and population groups, as they relate and interact with the growing number of minority groups in the school system. .
             By incorporating a multicultural education into the daily lives of students, educators would help narrow the existing class and racial divide. According to Ukpokodu Multiculturalism in education needs to involve a curriculum whereby history, literature, current events, issues, and .
             concepts are taught from various point of views that reflect the diversity both within our communities and society as a whole. I believe that educators need to teach students about the diverse cultures they see around them everyday. I also believe that by neglecting other cultures, educators deny the students the right to gain a better sense of identity through knowledge. .
             Those against multiculturalism would have us believe that multiculturalism would have an adverse effect to our national unity, and they label its supporters as "separatists." They also argue that multiculturalism creates a methodical elimination of Western traditions and values, and it will make white students feel guilty. Multiculturalism not only recognizes Western traditions and values, it also recognizes the values of differences, and helps students become responsive and socially responsible.
