Genetically Modified Food

Most people would rather not eat foods that are sprayed with these dangerous chemicals. This is why it may be cheaper and safer to engineer a crop to be pest resistant. Such genes have been proven effective in resistance to plant diseases and cold. An antifreeze gene has been use to make plants such as potatoes and tobacco resistant to cold temperatures that would normally kill untreated products. .
There are also many arguments against the genetic manipulation of crops. Allergens are a major concern in regards to human health risks. It is know that people have allergic reactions to such products as peanuts. Genetically modified foods could produce more allergens such as this one with an uncertain effect on humans. The fear that most have is of the unknown. Anything could happen with these foods that could be of human health concern. People just ant to know they are safe and wish to have more testing on the techniques of producing Gm foods. People in this day and age just prefer natural foods when given the choice. When there is no choice it may be a different story but this has been proven true. Not too long ago McDonald's was at the center of controversy involving their fries. When you ordered you"re perfectly golden brown bouquet of fries you weren't getting regular potatoes. You were getting genetically engineered New Leaf potatoes. These potatoes were engineered by the Monsanto Corporation and had a built in pesticide. This insect repellent is present in every part of the plant. The most disturbing part of this is that it is even in the spud. This means that each potato that is produced has insecticide in it. The gene used to accomplish this is the same BT, gene mentioned earlier. This gene was patented by Monsanto. Monsanto was able to get started early on by the support of McDonalds because McDonalds is one of the biggest buyers of potatoes in the world. However, due to growing public unease McDonalds stop purchasing the New Leaf potatoes and Monsanto had to stop making the product.
