What We Take for Granted


There were no electric wires anywhere except in the big cities, like Nairobi or Eldoret, so any light that they had came from fires or flashlights. Everyone goes around barefoot, unless you are rich enough to afford some shoes, or smart enough to steal a pair. The women carry everything on their heads, either in baskets or bags. I saw one lady walking around a "construction zone" with a sledgehammer on her head. I guess it frees up your hands to do other things. The clothing for the children include a pair of shorts for the boys and a dress for the girls. Every article of clothing that I saw was torn or tattered, or falling apart from being worn so much. No matter where you go, the children always greet you the same way. They run up to you with sadness and sorrow in their eyes, looking for pity or some sort of handout. Their faces are caked with so much dust from the roads, their skin looks light brown. Their hands are rough and covered in callouses, as are their feet. They all pretty much speak really good english, and if they speak very little, they know the word "money" really well. For them, this is a full-time job. It is either look for handouts or steal. They don't like to just receive something for nothing though. They want to "earn" their money, so if you give them some shillings, they would offer to give you a tour of the town. Then they would run away without waiting for an answer. .
             The second lesson is that some of the things we take for granted over in America .
             are not even available to the people in Kenya. Take ice for example. There is no ice over .
             there because there is no electricity to refrigerate and keep it frozen. Have you ever tried .
