The Storm by Kate Chopin

            "The Storm" by Kate Chopin is a masterpiece promoting immorality. Moral means "have or relating to principles of right or wrong." (Franklin Dictonary) It is a story about Alcee' and Calixta having an affair while a strom is raging through their town. The immorality of it exists, due to the fact that both parties are married and have children. We are also aware that Calixta has been married for at least five years. Calixta and Alcee' are derespectul, adultress and decietful. These qualities are immoral.
             The first immoral act that take palce is coldheated. By neither of them telling each other no and where they stood in their relationships. Calixta is obviously uncomfortable and it is not because her husband and son are in the strom Calixta thinks to herself "she felt no uneasiness for their safety" it is the precence of Alcee. she "nervously gathers at the window" with a greatly distracted look on her face." then Alcee' stands from the rocking chair where he was sitting and stands behind Calixta. As a bolt of lightening strikes, Calixta "staggered backward and Alcee's arms encircled her." At this point the conversation should have come up, that they were uncomfortable and it would be best if Alcee' left or waited in another room, but that converation never even peeked it's head. Instead Alcee' reminisces with her about assumption and "had aroused all the old-time infatuation," that he felt for Calixta. This converstion is immoral in itself: they are having a conversation about their passionate time in Assumption instead of talking about their families or the weather. Alcee' begins to notice all of Calixtas attributes "her face that was warm and steaming and her full bosom that distrubed him powerfully.".
             Where is his respect for Calixta and his wife Clarisse? In Asumption Alcee' had seen Calixta as a "passionate creature whose defenselessness had made her defense." and to save her "he would resort to a desperate flight.
