The main point in the first essay, Love and Gold the author is trying to point to the reasons why women are leaving their children and families and migrating to America and other First world Nations to work as nannies for middle/upper class families. The author was trying to raise awareness to the number of families in Third-World countries who are motherless because the mother has traveled overseas, whether it was because of lack of job opportunities in their native land, or whether they were just sick of the development and industrialization that was coming into their country. The women believe that they are doing what is ultimately correct for their family by working and sending their surplus money home to their families. .
The main point in the second essay, The Nanny Dilemma was to allow the reader to come into the life of a typical nanny. It describes a lot of the things that go on behind closed doors so to say. It tells of the abuses that many women face as well as the lack of respect and care given to the nannies themselves. These nannies are expected to go to work every day, even when sick, and be on call 24-7, even though they do not get the pay that they should for working the odd hours that they do. .
The main point of the third essay, The Care Crisis in the Philippines, was to allow the reader to see that because the women are leaving their native lands to work as migrant workers overseas, their families and children are not receieving the care that the government and UN would like them to receive. The mother's are not there for the children to grow up and to nurture and care for them when they are sick. Also, if something were to happen to the father or grandparents of the children, then who would take care of the children because chances are that the mother will be unable to return home due to financial reasons.
The main point of the fourth essay, Blowups and other unhappy Endings, is to show that the nannies, housekeepers, caregivers, whoever from overseas, are not always understood or treated in a way that they are used too.
