A Killer Addiction


The many health problems that can be caused by obesity may reduce a person's life expectancy. Type 2 Diabetes is a disease that is often associated with diabetes. Someone with this disease develops a resistance to insulin, which regulates the levels of blood sugar. Over time, the resulting high blood sugar can cause serious damage to the body. Another health problem related to the addiction to food is high blood pressure. In this case, excess body weight strains the ability of the heart to function properly. Thus causing high blood pressure, which can lead to strokes and significant heart and kidney damage. One can also suffer from something called sleep apnea. This occurs when fat deposits in the tongue and neck cause obstruction of the air passage. Since the obstruction is increased when sleeping on ones back people may find themselves waking up frequently to find a better sleeping position. The result of losing sleep may cause daytime drowsiness and headaches. Being overweight can also cause Osteoarthritis of weight-bearing joints. This is when additional weight on the joints causes pain due to inflammation, and results in decreased mobility. The large, heavy abdomen and relaxation of the pelvic muscles may cause the valve on the urinary bladder to be weakened, leading to leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing, or laughing. This is called urinary stress incontinence, which can also be an effect of obesity. Menstrual irregularities are also an effect of obesity. Some overweight women often experience disruptions of the menstrual cycle, including interruption of the menstrual cycle, .
