Hero

The level of intensity keeps growing until the hero has reached the very important challenge; the main challenge. The main challenge will help the hero distinguish his true friends from his false friends. Differentiating those who are deflecting the hero's energy for their own desires from friends willing to assist the hero becomes quite apparent at this point in the journey (Class notes, Sept. 5). .
Succeeding the main challenge would be the hero's greatest challenge. This mission will be the most crucial moment for the hero. Here he or she will enter the dragon's lair alone, and face the dragon; the hero's greatest fear. Upon successfully slaying the dragon (conquering the hero's own fear) we find the hero will be transformed. This transformation leads to a revelation where the hero discovers them self, and uncovers what the actual mission is, and what must be done to reach the end. The hero's newfound identity and mission merge together to form one in the hero's new life (Class notes, Sept. 5).
The hero's journey comes to an end when he returns home anxious to enrich society with new skills, and awareness or gift. This contribution may include a spiritual message, or wisdom for daily life. However, these prophets are not welcomed and often rejected by family, and neighbors. Society would rather kill the hero than submit to these new ideas because they are basically afraid of change. They are afraid of change because it takes effort, and sacrifice. This rejection of the hero's hard earned message leaves him disillusioned, frustrated, and habitually ends in self-exile, or death (Class notes, Sept 5).
The world's first epic, the Epic of Gilgamesh follows the Hero's Journey quite accurately. In this epic Gilgamesh is depicted as two-thirds god and one-third man (text, pg 39). Despite Gilgamesh's blessing of the gods, he is faced with the tragic loss of Enkidu, a close friend. In the wake of his friend's death, Gilgamesh sets off on a risky expedition to uncover the secret to everlasting life (text, pg 39).
