Domestic Violence


Many times these women have been warn down to the point of having no confidence in their own abilities (NSW Domestic Violence Committee, 1991). .
             The myth that men can not or will not change is another belief that has developed. Some men may appear to change in the short term by controlling the physical violence but compensate it with other forms of control. This is mostly because attitudinal change is a difficult and time consuming process. Research has shown that at least forty percent of men continue to beat their partners (NSW Domestic Violence Committee, 1991). The thought that the relationship will get better is another myth that has formulated around finding the solution to domestic violence. These relationships are stubbornly resistant to change rarely without specific intervention. The likelihood of domestic violence disappearing is unrealistic. Even with the best help, change is still a slow and difficult process. Violence should never be an acceptable method of gaining control over a loved one. Not only is it illegal, nobody ever asks or deserves to be abused. Accountability for the violence rests completely with the perpetrator not the victim. .
             FORMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
             Domestic violence shows its evil face in many forms beside physical. Domestic violence can include sexual abuse verbal abuse, psychological/emotional abuse, economic abuse, and social abuse. The most common form of domestic violence is physical abuse. Physical abuse takes many forms such as punching, grabbing, kicking, breaking bones, throwing victims against the wall, and burning. Physical abuse also includes damaging household goods and furniture and denial of basic needs, like sleep and nutrition. In some cases, the victim is beaten with objects or threatened with them. The injuries that these victims receive are not always obvious because the abusers usually will hurt them in a place that is covered by clothing.
