The Bench

The story cowers over a period of a few hours. .
The story takes place in November 1952/53; we can say that because that is when Richard Rive wrote the story. Also we can say that because apartheid was very intense at that time. The apartheid system was put out of order in the beginning of the 90's.
In November it is autumn and autumn can symbolise depression and a gloomy mood. But the sun is shining, and that can be a symbol of hope (maybe Karlie's victory in the end of the story).
The story takes place at the Grand Parade in Johannesburg, South Africa. The story also takes place at a railway station. .
The reason, that the story takes place at a railway station, can be because there is allot of stress and busyness at places like that. If the bench had been in a park, then maybe the people would not react so strongly about Karlie sitting on the bench, because usually we connect a park with happiness, peace and love and in a park people are maybe not as stressed as they are at a railway station.
The story takes place in the South African apartheid environment. This is important to know because it explains the thoughts, feelings and actions of the main character in this story. Karlie is not well of because he is black, and society is white oriented.
             Character.
Karlie: He is a nice, polite, black man who lives in Cape Town, South Africa. He is interested in black/white politics and thinks allot about life and how all people, black and white, should have the same rights. Karlie wonders why people are so prejudiced, and why everyone just can't live in peace. Karlie has not got any prejudice himself.
Karlie challenges the apartheid system because of the injustice between blacks and whites. He gets the courage to his because of what the speakers at the rally are saying. Because of this we see that Karlie is very brave and has got a pretty strong personality. Karlie's challenge is probably something that several other black people have wanted to do but they have not dared to challenge the norms of society.
