History of Twins

In most cases the height, weight, strength, hair, and eye color were so closely similar than many could not tell them apart. Most twins even spoke in the same tone, but usually sang in different keys. Now the one noticeable difference in all twins was handwriting. Galton had only one case of twins where no one including the twins themselves could differentiate between the 2. There were only a few cases that the handwriting among the twins was considered similar. Considering that handwriting runs in families yet twins possess such different styles, Galton concludes that handwriting is a test of difference and that it may be a way of finding one's character. .
Galton came across many mistakes made concerning the twins identity because of their similarity. Even though many parents attempt the distinguish the twins by hair ribbons or colors, twins were sometimes rewarded or punished in being mistook for the other twin. Many mothers reported having the fear that when the twins were infants they were switched, and Twin A was therefore presumed as B and B as A. As the twins grew older the mistakes by parents lessen, but they stayed the same by strangers. Many teachers were unable to distinguish their twin students. Galton gives general quoted examples from twins, relatives of twins, and other acquaintances as seen here. These are examples of twin mistakes in adolescence: .
"Exactly alike in all, their school masters never could tell them apart; at dancing parties they constantly changed partners without discovery; their close resemblance is scarcely diminished by age.".
"Two twins were fond of playing tricks, and complaints were frequently made; but the boys would never own which was the guilty one, and the complainants were never certain which of the two he was. One head master used to say he would never flog the innocent for the guilty, and another used to flog both." .
The mistakes continued into adulthood even by a twin's own child.
