The Internet - Satan's Tool?

Emily Bell puts forward her ideas clearly and forcefully, using example, analogy and analysis and clarification. She also makes excellent use of appeals to pathos in her essay.
First, one must look at the intended audience. Emily Bell directs this essay towards parents of younger children who have access to the internet and different chat rooms. The reason for this is because adults, unlike adolescents, do not know the computer and the internet as well as those who are younger. This reason is because children from this new generation are all brought up knowing all about the internet and how computers work. They are also more likely to not judge things too well, such as people that they chat with online, not knowing who the person is on the other end of the chat line.
The reason behind the fact that Emily Bell has chosen to have a parental audience is to give adults an idea of what is going on in the chat rooms and how their children are being affected by the internet, the computers, and even others who are in the same situation. The author also signals out what is known as spam. Which is anything from "mad terrorists swapping bomb recipes; snake-oil salesmen desperate to increase the size of your penis; adverts for Viagra, Russian brides and cheap loans" (The Guardian, Emily Bell, http://www.guardian.co.uk/online/comment/story/0,12449,1049195,00.html, Thursday September 25th, 2003).
The author brings in different evidence about the internet and its uses. It is significant because the author is attempting to show the world what is going on with the internet. The fact that you no longer have to leave your house to do anything. You can shop online, you can work from home online, and you can do anything with the internet access.
Onto further discussion. About the author, I do not believe that the author is an expert. It does not seem as though the author has put much effort into researching this information.
