Other than mass executions by firing squads, the Japanese perpetrated a number of beheadings. Everyone from the common foot soldier to the highest-ranking General both committed and encouraged these beheadings. In fact, two officers actually held a competition for who could behead the most Chinese. The winner of this competition received a hefty check and a lot of reputation. Also, women's breasts were cut off; and men were castrated. Water torture was another form of killing. First, the victim was filled with water through the mouth and sometimes the nose, usually to see them choke. Then water would be force fed until the stomach bulged. After, the Japanese torturer would kick and/or jump on the stomach causing it to burst.
What did you learn had happened in Nanking?.
In Nanking, babies were thrown in the air and bayoneted on the way down. Some people were buried waist deep and torn apart by German shepherds. People were killed by fire, freezing, mutilation, and explosion. Prisoners were used for bayonet practice. Women's breasts were cut off; and men were castrated. When tanks got stuck and was not able to go across a ditch because the ditch was empty, they would round up all the civilians in the area: men, women, children, and shoot them all down; putting their bodies in the ditch, so the tank could go over it. It was horrifying and amazingly some of the people survived. Some women would hide in the holes in the ground while others would dress in rags, or shave their heads and smeared soot all over their faces, so they would appear to be too ugly or diseased to be raped. There were people who pretended to be dead, then clawed their way out of half-buried graves or hid under mounds of bodies. A Buddhist nun and a little girl did that for several days, almost a week, not daring to open their eyes because they were afraid they would get discovered. They stayed like that waiting until somebody came and rescued them.
