Land to farmers is not worth much if there is no way to sell their product to out of market customers. I believe that the Pacific Railroad Act helped the railroad companies become a monopoly yet, provided the means neccessry for settlement in the west. .
             Similarlly, the Homestead Act in 1862 was another law that was intened to increase the western economy. The Homestead Act provided one hundred - sixty acres free to anyone. The only stipulation's were that the owner would have to build a house and farm the land for five years. The Pacific railroad and Homestead Act did accomplish what they were intended to do.
             While the nation was growing economically with the expansion west that the railroads are a major part of, socially in America, African-Americans were redefining their status individually and with assistance from the federal government. Social reforms from this time period are still contributing to today's society. .
             The first laws and policies toward African-Americans came after the Civil war in 1865. The Thirteenth amendment was the end of slavery and the beginning of social conflict in America. The most positive side effect from the Civil war however was the passing of the Thirteenth amendment. Newly reconstructed governments in the south were urged to pass this amendment or face penitilties from the Civil War. The Thirteenth amendment was written in such a way that stirred bitterness and hatred from whites toward African-Americans because of the their new liberation from slavery. The federal government passed the Thirteenth amendment to validate the Civil war almost to the point that the war was solely fought on the cause of slavery. .
             African-Americans were elated in their new freedom from slavery, little did they know at the time that freedom does not come without hardships. The Thirtheenth amendment was necessary as a conclusion to the Civil War even though the amendment itself did not guareenty all men are equal without bias.
