She claims that becoming pregnant is like waking up one morning and realizing you have been hooked up to a dying violinist who needs to make use of your organs to survive for a certain amount of time. She goes on to say that although we may not like the person to decide to separate from the violinist, even if he was not endangering her health in any way, we would say that it was not morally wrong for the woman to "sever the tubes" because she made no commitment to the him, and never agreed to be put in such a situation. While I feel she is probably right about the scenario she gives, and that we cannot rightly judge the woman for abandoning the violinist (even though I would probably let the man live and help him if I could, no matter what the cost), I feel that this in no way reflects what becoming pregnant entails. Thompson seems to feel that women become pregnant without ever making any conscious decision of their own. As human beings we are not "taken in the middle of the night" and forced to have sex with people without ever knowing it. We make a conscious decision to have sex with another individual, and I feel that most people in our culture, especially since the initiative to have sex education in schools, know that sex can result in pregnancy. It is a decision that is made and judged upon with a known consequence, even though we may think the possibility of that consequence to become a reality is very small. She does this again later when she uses the metaphor that it is like leaving your window open, having a seed become planted in the floor, growing, and then taking over a part of the house. Again, this implies that there was no decision being made by the woman. The reality of the situation is not one like either of these examples. If people knew that opening a window could lead to a seed being planted in their floor, they would probably be a lot less likely to open the window.
