Louis and meets her uncle Tommy who says "Ritie, don't worry "cause you ain't pretty. Plenty pretty women I seen digging ditches or worse. You smart. I swear to God, I rather you have a good mind than a cute behind"(56).Margarite understands from her uncle's speech that she is smart and has a good mind to create her future and begin to believe in herself. Uncle Tommy says that pretty women are digging ditches or worse and he tries to notarize Margarite that it is better to be smart than cute behind, because if she has "her head on her shoulders" she can find a good job and has more opportunities than good-looking women with their ditches. From Margarite's uncle's opinion she gets a lesson that there is no reason to give up because of her appearance, most people appreciate intellect and self-confidence.
             Margarite has a very difficult period in her life. Her childhood was ended when Mr. Freeman rapes her and after he has been found dead on the lot behind the slaughterhouse. Margarite feels sorry and guilt because she lies at the court and she decides "The only thing I could do was to stop talking to people other than Bailey" (73). Margarite does not understand that Mr. Freeman does to her and she feels bad for his death. She thinks the best idea to stop talking to people and submerges in reading books. Margarite is trying to find herself in books. She noticed that women can not be heroes and stars to think that maybe something wrong with her and she should be a male. After hospital she does not talk to anyone besides Bailey and her behavior is irritated all people around her. When Margarite comes back to her grandmother in Stamps she feels better because Momma cares her. At Stamps Margarite meets Ms. Flowers who become the first person whom Margarite trusts and who helps her to come out from silence and lets Margarite to understand that her guilt about Mr. Freeman does not make any sense "It would be safe to say that she made me proud to be Negro, just by being herself" (79).
