Girl

So essentially the superego is being represented by women who have accepted there roles as women in society given to them by men and are now telling this girl that this is the way she is suppose to live as well, as a servant towards men. .
The id in "Girl" is also being represented by some of the advice that the girl has received over time. The id is almost always described as something primitive in psychology. In "Girl" women are depicted as something primitive and dangerous that needs to be controlled by men. The whole story is basically a set of rules that have been designed for men to control women. One key place where a mans control can be seen over a woman in "Girl" is when the superego says, "this is how a man bullies you" (585). This shows that men try and control women because the bullying is just another way of getting control over someone. The id plays a very important role in the reading of "Girl," because the id is how society, both men and women, look at females who do not follow the set of expectations that men, the superego, have set forth and therefore do not fit into the mold of society. Evidence of this is shown throughout the story by the repeated reference of the girl becoming a slut whenever she does not follow the mold. However the id the term id can also be switched with the word evil in this story which can then be replaced by the word slutty in "Girl." On four separate occasions in "Girl" the superego tells the girl that, because she is a woman she will become a slut, the id. This can be seen when the superego tells her "on Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like the slut you are so bent on becoming" (854). This is important because the superego telling the girl that because she is a woman she will become a slut, as if becoming a slut is a bad thing. Another key element is how the superego tries to tell the girl how to hide who she is, because society will assume her to be a slut.
