             Efficient, Effective and Entertaining.
             How much would you say that television, commercials, and other forms of media influence your self-confidence? Would you say there is a difference in how men and women critique their personal appearance? This is the issue Dave Barry chooses to address in his essay entitled "The Ugly Truth About Beauty." Barry shows men as confident in their average appearance whereas women are constantly striving to achieve a Barbie-like figure. He explains his belief that the majority of women consider themselves "not good enough," (324) and that this view should change because men do not notice most of the attempts women make at a better appearance. His humorous writing style combined with his structure and word choice with strong comparison-contrast techniques proved very effective in sending his message to the audience. The essay was well expressed and a very enjoyable read. His entertaining and straight forward humor is very successful in proving his points succinctly.
             The main goal of any author is to capture their readers" attention early on and keep them reading for the remainder of the authors work. Dave Barry chooses to take a casual approach to this difficult task. He uses humor to seize the attention of the readers and kept the laughter through the entirety of his essay so the reader can easily stay hooked. His essay kicks off with the most frequently asked question from a woman to a man, "How do I look?" (323). He then jumps into his casual man to man tone and explains the perfect way to go about this delicate situation. "The best technique is to form an honest yet sensitive opinion, then collapse on the floor with some kind of fatal seizure.you will never come up with the right answer," (323). As he begins to introduce the differences between how men and women see themselves the humor simply picks up.
