More than just a story of a woman on a mission,A Worn Path? depicts the struggle and hardship that faces many people in society today. Phoenix portrays the plight of an elderly black woman that is forced to take a journey to find medicine to treat her ailing grandson. This story can be taken for the literal meaning which we get from simply reading the story, or what the story could represent. This happens to be a story filled with images and ideas that point fingers in different directions and help maintain a blurry image of the actual story itself. From what is understood in the story she represents a strong figure, and a role model type of character. She defies odds multiple times and proves that she has heart, soul, and physical stability. Phoenix is a woman that deserves a big pat on the back, and having the strength to over come this all is uncanny.
The hard trip that was made in this story was a walk on the worn path. Phoenix travels the path to obtain medicine to help heal her grandson's throat. In the process she faces many obstacles, but in the end she overcomes them all to achieve self dignity. She confronts a few other characters in the story that attempt to insult and poke fun, but she shrugged it off as if it didn't matter. When people are oppressed in society it is rare that one can close their ears to jeers and disrespect. Often people lash out irrationally or become violent, but the pacifistic Phoenix deflects the negative treatment and acts unfazed. Ignorance is bliss, and she seems strong and confident which are qualities that older people sometimes lack. .
In life people have been ostracized for doing things that they believe were normal activities. Some might look down upon Phoenix's attempt to help her grandson. It might be a ludicrous idea to take the journey for medicine when her grandson's chances of healing are slim and none. Like many faced with obstacles, this woman deals with them almost in stride and takes care of her business as she deems fit.
