Aztec Empire


            
             The Aztecs roamed throughout the today, Central America, until they found their city at the Island of Tenochtitlan. The Aztecs began their journey in 1168, in search of home with instructions from their god of war Huitzilopochtli. He told them to travel until the saw and eagle perching on a snake on a cactus. This was where they were destined to build their city. This did not happen until the year of 1325. During the same period as the Inca Empire, the Aztec Empire controlled Mesoamerican from Mexico to the territories of Salvador and Honduras for nearly 100 years. The Aztecs achieved domination of the valley by forming triple alliance's with the neighbors at Texcoco and Tlacopan. The empire consisted of native speaking people known as the nahuatl-speakers, who had migrated from the Pacific Northwest and inhabited the area, which would become the capital of Mexico, Tenochtitlan. .
             The Aztecs began their reign in 1427 after the leader, Itzcoatl, with the help of surrounding cities, conquered the tepanecs and obtained control of the Mexican basin. Kingship of the nation was inherited from brother to brother, then to the eldest son of the eldest brother. Leaders were choosen by religious leaders and men of political power, based mainly upon they"re ability in the battle fields and their ability to speak eloquently. In the Years of 1452 - 1454 wide spread famine arose due to an extensive drought, 25,000 people were sacrificed in hopes of bringing relief to the region. Human Sacrifice played a great role in the religion of these people. Priest's would slash open a human's chest and rip out his heart. They believed that the gods needed hearts and blood of humans to stay strong. Most victims were slaves or prisoners of war. People of this culture were hard workers, farmers, and merchants. Aside to this they were feverish worshipers of many gods of the sun, and strong defenders of the territory in which the hand conquered.
