Critique of sociology pieces

Younge put it best when he wrote, "democracy has its place, but it cannot compete with destiny." So far, Younge has done a good job of introducing the reader to the topic, and providing concrete examples to help the reader further understand the difference between realism and idealism.
Younge's conclusion, and his main point of the article, is that "destiny and democracy do not sit well together." As he points out, there lies a vast difference between the two. Democracy gives the notion that "we," either as individuals or society, can make a difference in the world. While destiny implies that no matter what, the outcome of the world has already been chosen by a greater power. I believe Younge's article makes a clear point, and delivers powerful examples to get that point across. His efforts to point out the distinction between realism and idealism don't go unnoticed as he stresses the facts that what people hope for is different from what they get. Never the less, Younge also puts across the notion that realism has it's place in modern society, but without idealism, we as a society lose that drive toward an "ideal world." .
The next article I will critique is a chapter taken from The Subcultures Reader, a book written by Gelder, K. and Thornton, S. The chapter I will be referring to is entitled "Subcultures, Cultures an Class," and the authors are John Clarke, Stuart Hall, Tony Jefferson and Brian Roberts. In summary, this reading covered the different schemes of subcultures and class, along with the search for individual identity. There are many factors that divulge in our quest for acceptance amongst peers, and conditions that exist which can persuade one class's influence over another. I believe the author used the term "hegemony" to describe the power a particular dominant class displays over a subordinate class. Further, these class's develop "culture," which is it's own unique form of character.
