Body Of Truth

.
In the novel Haydon describes Grajeda as a man "full of surprises" (269). When Grajeda lies to Haydon, he has to make a decision if he trusts Grajeda. Haydon has to make this assessment not based on honesty. Does Haydon trust and like Grajeda? One may think that after someone lies to your face and withholds valuable information from you, you would find them shady, but Haydon feels an "inexplicable affinity with the erudite doctor-rebel" (440). Haydon feels this relationship with Grajeda because he himself is a rebel. In Guatemala people that ask questions die and people that don't ask questions die. Haydon personally thinks its worthwhile to investigate to find the truth, and he goes out on a limb to seek the truth. When Haydon puts himself in danger he is acting like a rebel and that is how he can relate himself to Grajeda. .
Another reason that Haydon decides he likes Grajeda is because of the contrast between Grajeda and Taylor cage. The contrast between the two clearly show the epigraph of the novel. In the contrast between the two men it is clear that we are meant to like Grajeda more. When Haydon talks about his feelings for Cage he describes him as "irredeemable" (449). The truth is that both Grajeda and Cage lied to Haydon about the woman's body in the morgue being Lena's body. One of the reasons why Grajeda is still liked even after he lied, is because he confessed to Haydon that he lied to him in a sincere way. Another reason Grajeda is liked is because he is a person who truly likes to help others outside of his medical profession. Haydon can see Grajeda's morals and that is why he bases his opinion of Grajeda on what Grajeda does and not on what he says. When Grajeda is compared to Cage he looks like a better person because cruelty is second nature in Cage's life. Cage does things solely for himself and breaks his allegiances with others if it benefits himself.
