Gender in the Media

While preparing for this project I faced the problem that although I have digital cable, I do not receive all of the channels, so it was very hard to finally come to fifteen channels when I had to go through twenty just to find one that actually worked. Out of my fifteen channels I recorded five movies, one cartoon, seven commercials, two sitcoms, a shopping channel, a religious channel, and four shows that were informative. .
The movie channels I recorded off of were three Encore Movie Channels: the action, mystery and western channels. All three of these movies contained only males. The other two movies were recorded off of HBO's. My shopping channel was the Home Shopping Network. I recorded a cartoon off of the channel Nick. The channels that I recorded commercials off of were TV land, Fox, family channel, Court TV, Weather channel and the Preview channel. I also recorded informative information off of Discovery Health and the Worship Channel.
In the recorded programs eight of them contained men only, while only two contained women only. Men and women were in eight of the programs. Also, there was one commercial that had a father and his two children, a boy and a girl, and another show that had both a mother and a father with their children.
There were five movies that were recorded. Out of the five-recorded four of them were men only in the cast. The movies that were male cast were all very serious in matter. The men seemed as if they did not complete the task at hand life would surely be over. Two of the male movies were in black and white, one was an old war movie and the other was an old western movie. Both of these movies focused on the masculinity of the men. In the movies the men were engaging in fighting and killing, and none of the movies were based on emotions. The movie that has a scene based on a woman was soft and emotional. The scene showed the women alone in her room wearing nothing but a small nightgown, brushing her hair and singing about a guy.
