Posse Comitatus

Gordon Kahl was a hard-working farmer, a war hero, and a religious man who had obeyed and respected the government for most of his life. His views on the government changed though when his income became low due to poor farm prices and he had little money to spare. Gordon took it upon himself to stop paying his taxes in 1968. Soon Gordon got himself in deep when he became Texas coordinator of the Posse Comitatus in 1975. With him being in the FBI's top ten wanted, he was hunted down several times before they actually had caught Gordon Kahl for good. Gordon vowed to never go back to jail alive and never backed down with what he believed in. Gordon Kahl and the Posse Comitatus.
"Gordon Kahl fired shots that are still heard in the North Dakota State Tax Department." (Donovan, 2003,www.bismarcktribune.com/series/kahl/021303a.html) In 1968, Tax Protestor Gordon Kahl stopped filing IRS 1040 Income Tax Returns. He was even the first tax protester in the modern times to kill an agent of the government. Except Gordon is no hero, except to others like him. .
Gordon Kahl joined a loosely organized group called Posse Comitatus in Texas in 1975, and was entitled as coordinator of the group. Posse members believe that the Federal government is controlled by "enemies" and they resist in paying taxes, as well as other duties of law abiding citizenship. Members believe there is no authority higher than the county sheriff. Some members of this group have even gone as far as refusing to apply for driver's licenses. In keeping with the Posse beliefs, recognizing no government authority above the county level, Gordon refused to renew his state driver's license in 1974.              Gordon Kahl had come from a small family owned farm in rural Heaton, North Dakota. There he lived along with his wife, Joan; and his son, Yorie.
