Pay to play

In an article in University Magazine, Les Lukach explains the population growth of student athletes and the rules of the NCAA and how the NCAA has somewhat of control over student athletes. It is stated, "Financial, educational, social and athletic controls all fall under the umbrella of the NCAA." It is also mentioned that student athletes have a difficult time managing academics, practice time and other physical activities that contribute to their performance on the field or court. In this article, Lukach covers the guidelines that student athletes must follow in order to receive scholarships. What to do and what not to do. It was also stated in the article, "The rules in this book are in the simplest terms, but there is room for interpretation, so the NCAA has created a Web site that lists all the possible interpretations." It's known that student athletes should not receive money for participation or accept gifts. It is also mentioned that student athletes should not be caught in public with a booster, for these will be considered a violation and could loose their scholarships, and/or be fined. .
Mark Edwards of The Decatur Daily Sports says, "Pay for play won't work for colleges." Edwards mentions how if colleges start paying some athletes, such as football players, what will be next. Paying for all athletes in college, such as golf, hockey, basketball, etc. According to Caleb Langston, college athletes do put a lot of time in theisport of choice and it makes for a difficult time to make extra money. But, Langston also goes on to mention how student athletes receive scholarship money that usually covers all expenses related to college life. It is also stated that in comparison to all other students, having all your college expenses taken care of is clearly a given to student athletes.
I fell that student athletes should not get paid by the college. If anything at all, I would suggest that the extra money that is earned by the NCAA go directly to scholarships for student athletes.
