The past and future seem to be one in the same, a never-ending vicious cycle. It's continual spiral only reinvents the past making our present day a mere image of a life long ago with a tinted hue upon it. Such is the case with our conceptions of the American land. By looking at works such as "Changing Woman and the Hero Twins", Plymouth Plantation, as well as Columbus" Journal of the First Voyage we can see how we repeat their same views toward the earth today.
In many parts of the United States a continual longing for the outdoors has become more and more pressing. In the crowded streets of Manhattan countless numbers of civilians choose to walk through Central Park in hopes of finding some type of refuge from every day city life. Similarly, in "Changing Woman and the Hero Twins" we can see the importance of nature to the Native American people. This can be seen through the Sun giving the lightning bolts to his sons in hopes of warding of the "monsters" that roamed upon his land. .

We have also come to value the land to which that has been given to us. In Plymouth Plantation, the reader is able to see the struggle between man and nature. It is from this experience that the Puritans have truly .
learned the value of their fruits. Their hard work through the winter storms make their lives difficult, however, it is not without reward. Their appreciation of the land is in return ten folds, and their belief in God only increases.
Unfortunately, we do not always value the land in the ways of the Native Americans or the Puritans. Our incessant exploitation of the land has often been a recycling occurrence during our existence upon this earth. As seen in Columbus" Journal of the First Voyage, the quest for gold has always appeared throughout history. Indeed, Columbus did value the land for which he reaped; however, it is his intentions that differ from those of the Native Americans and Puritans.
