By discouraging assimilation through accommodation, the government is not only doing a disservice to those who deserve the same opportunities as everyone else, but to society as a whole. The millions of dollars spent annually would be better spent teaching English to minorities, thereby assisting with the assimilation into Americas society (Shelby 1). .

The various cultures the English language is derived from are the same cultures that make up the "heart" of America. A culturally diverse society is a vital one that allows maximum freedom for creativity and achievement (Abale 4).
             A U.S. Census report indicated that between 95-96% of all U.S. residents are proficient in the English language. A recent Congressional Study revealed only 265 of the 400,000 official documents printed by the federal government each year are printed in languages other than English. With approximately 8.7% of all U.S. citizens being foreign born, the language assimilation rate is an astounding 42.5% per year (Owen 1). Supporters of the movement claim their goal is to help non-English speakers economically as well as socially, but they fail to provide any alternatives or programs to assist in teaching English to immigrants (Abale 2). Another common misconception is immigrants to the U.S. are unwilling to learn English. The San Francisco Community College Center has approximately 3000 names on waiting lists for English as a Second Language (ESL) taught in Asian and Hispanic. California's English only courses are so crowded, 40,000 students were turned away in Los Angeles County alone.
