One Halloween Night

It was Friday night, the last night of October and our football team had just won against Bloomington North. It was a home game in Mooresville and we won 32-28. Throughout the entire game the score was close; so close in fact, we were not sure who was going to win. With 3 minutes left in the game, Steve Terrell, my best friend since childhood, made the last tackle and sealed the game for us! The crowd cheered and the team went crazy; the mood for the rest of the night was set. I learned there was a victory party at a friend's house off Mann Road and since it was Halloween, decided to go. It was unseasonable warm that night so after the game I waited outside for my best friend to see if he was going too. When Steve came out of the school, he was so psyched from the game that he said he would go to the party. We each took our own cars and off to the party we went. As soon as we got there, people came rushing up to Steve congratulating him on the good job he did at the game. You could see Steve loved the attention, but he was a sincere guy who did not let it go to his head. I wandered off to mingle with people from school, leaving Steve and some others from the team to discuss the game. As I looked around, I noticed there were many people at the party, at least 30 classmates, some drinking beer. I walked into the kitchen to grab one for myself. It was Halloween and we had just won an important football game so celebrating seemed like the right thing to do. I heard Mike, the owner if the house and father of a fellow classmate, telling some of the kids that if they drank, they had to stay the night, no one was to drink and drive. As the night progressed, I noticed Steve seemed pretty messed up, his speech was a little slurred and I wondered if he had taken something besides the alcohol. Someone at the party had some Oxy-Contin pills and I thought I saw Steve take one. I drank only a few beers, afraid to consume more than that.
