The Causes of World War One

Russia needed capital to industrialize. France provided Russia with this capital. Italy also made a secret treaty with France which allied their two countries. This showed a weakness in the Triple Alliance of Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy.
These alliances between France and Russia left Britain feeling isolated. Even though Britain did not usually involve itself in affairs on the continent the circumstances on the continent made an ally necessary. Britain found that ally in Japan. .
The French seemed an unlikely ally for Britain from a historical perspective because Britain always stood against the most powerful country on the continent which had been France for the longest time. However it was now Germany who was the dominating power on the continent. Another area of conflict between France and Britain was their colonial differences. These differences were resolved by an agreement between France and Britain to recognize each others sovereignty. This agreement was finalized by the Entente Cordiale that documented the understanding between the two countries. .
With France already being allied with Russia, Britain found the Entente Cordiale's natural compliment to be a second Entente with Russia. With the finalization of this Entente in 1907 Germans felt increasingly isolated. To test the Entente between France and Britain, Germany challenged French presence in Morocco. However, the Entente stood firm and Germany was forced to back down. Some colonial disputes had to be settled before this Entente could commence and these will be mentioned in greater detail later on. .
Another possible cause of World War One was the intense military build up just prior to the war. All the countries within the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente built railroads. These railroads were placed in strategic locations near the borders of neighboring countries which they perceived as a possible threat. The railroads had no other purpose like trade or industry other than to be preparing for a potential war.
