The Concept of War in English Literature

In Beowulf, the fight between Grendel, and Beowulf is a perfect depiction of the war between good and evil. Beowulf is an honourable, brave hero; whereas Grendel is a fierceless, ugly monster who strikes the mankind with just the purpose of destroying. From the perspective of Beowulf, the fight he is involved in is honourable, and he is right to fight, because he fights to protect the people of Heorot, and to get rid of the evil. Grendel's fight, on the other hand, is a shameful, and disgraceful one, ( ofcourse he doesn't feel any shame or disgrace ) because there is no right to fight in it. He comes to destroy, and has nothing good mind. His act is evil.
At the end of the fight, Beowulf is the victor. He overcame evil with his bravery, so his fight is an atmost honourable one. But, even if he had fallen in battle, and had lost the fight, it would be remembererd, his bravery would be praised, and his name would be amond the honourable men, because he fought for the protection, and the right of the people.
" The Battle Of Maldon " depicts a huge war which took place between the noble warriors of brave earl Birthnoth, and the mean Vikings. Earl Birthnoth is the protector of his people. He is involved in this war to protect his country from evil, he has no evil in mind, he doesn't want to conquer new lands, make a fortune and/or doesn't feel any thirst for blood. These evil acts are acts for which he wouldn't even waste his power to raise one of his hands against other people. A fight with such purposes would be a dishonourable one. But, as this man is a man of honour, when it comes to the protection of one's own land, the brave earl would give his life in war without a second thought.
What about the Vikings? What are they fighting for? Do they have any honourable reason to declare war on this noble men? Is their declaration of war against English people a fair one? Appearently it is not. They are fighting neither to protect their own land, nor to stop evil.
