What is the role of avant garde?

            The Avant Garde was a cutting edge art movement that originally began in France in 1850. It takes its name from the military role of the advanced guard, and its role in the art movement is characterised by this definition. The artists of the avant-garde sought to tear down the old restrictions of traditional art and society as a whole. .
             Courbet was one of the first artists to align himself with the avant-garde movement. He was a radical and had been imprisoned for tearing down monuments in a protest against the elite classes. Courbet was a realist and therefore depicted ordinary subject matter in his art, rather than the lofty and magical works that the upper classes desired. Millet was another artist who wished to portray the ordinary working classes. His work inspired renowned artists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dali. However it was in all forms of art and literature that the avant-garde left its mark. Breton and Aragon in the novel; poetry by Breton, Aragon and Soupalt; drama by Jarry, painting by Dali and Margritte; sculpture by Ducahmp; photography by Man Ray and Heartfield and cinema by Dali and Brunel. .
             The focus of the avant-garde was to upset bourgeoisie society. Dali and Brunel created a controversial film featuring:.
             A dead donkey stuffed inside a piano with pus oozing out of the donkey's eye sockets and mouth, being dragged by two men harnessed like animals crawling across the floor .
             Shocking images like these incensed society yet were an attempt by the artists to broaden the perspective of a close-minded society. However those artists that upset, challenged and confused the upper crust were still reliant upon those very people to fund their work. While initially the work had been angry reaction against upper classes, later on in the movement the artists began to take on another role in society. The avant-garde wished to serve as the moral consciousness of the upper class much as religion had traditionally done.
