Muhammad Ali

David Remnick's book King of the World colorfully highlights some of Ali's best poetic moments. "Who would have thought/ When they came to fight/ that they'" witness the launching/ of a human satellite?" (Remnick 148-149). Ali was able to keep his audience constantly amazed and shocked by some of his antics. Who will be able to forget the boxer who would pull a "Dracula Bit" and pretend to suck his opponent's blood in a pre-fight interview? The public loved to watch Ali. He became what they wanted to be, absolutely confident in the face of towering beasts.
Ali is considered the greatest boxer in history because of his charismatic personality. Even more than being charismatic, Ali has proven himself compassionate. Ali has the type of features on his face that almost make it hard to believe he made his living by physically whipping men down into canvas. His face and actions speak volumes of his ability to help and care for the people around him. Ali was highly criticized for his protest against the Vietnam War. The heavyweight champion stated "I have no problem with them Viet Cong." It didn't matter to him that he would be stripped of his heavyweight title, which he had sought for since he was twelve years old, Ali stood by his convictions. In addition, there are countless stories circulating around by the selfless acts of this man. In Ferdie Pacheco's book Muhammad Ali: A view from the corner, a story is told which emphasizes Ali's tender side. Ali had heard of a community of Jewish old people who were about to be evicted because of a $100,000 debt. "It was cold in New York, and the thought of those old people on the street got to Ali." Without any hesitation, Ali made a phone call and promised to donate the money providing his name not be used. At the time Ali did not want his religious beliefs to cause problems and also there were always people "in need" from his camp (Pacheco 209-210).
