             Beginning in the early 1850 san Francisco began to see it's first drastic immigration of Chinese. Much of the reasons for Chinese immigration was to escape many of the atrocities that were happening in their home land along with the hope of a better life in California. Women were scarce in California , and aspiring entrepreneurs who came to California demanded these Chinese prostitutes services. Prostitutes of the time maintained some control over their destiny. Some took proposals of marriage of weaklthy suitors, or disappeared into the western wilderness.
             Those who stayed in Chinatown faced violence that was inflicted by whites of the era. There were many factors that led to the exploitation of Chinese women in California. . One giant factor was The absence of women in California during the time led to the large demand for their services. Men who had traveled to California in search of gold or a better life struggled with the the lonliensees that came in the California frontier. A a consequence prostitutes becamce in great demand Chinese prostitutes were in constant danger of being kidnapped and had to put up with constant verbal and physical abusel. In the early pioneer days in SF Chinese women were treated with respect, and were highly vlued. However as the family structutre becan to emerge in CA attitudes of the time changed back to the victorialn morals of the time and women whe were still in prostitution ran the risk to being stigmatized as social deviants. There were auctions that were helod where Chinese women were as a secondary wife to prostitute. .
             One giant factor were the means in which Chinese women were thwe use of kidnapping to get Chinese women to prostitute. Many American steamship companies were used to transport women from ther homeland to Claifornia. The conditions the women encountered were dismal. Their basic human rights were stripped due to primitive conditions and food shortages.
