As a volunteer you can help with sports training, fund-raising, administrative help, competition planning and staffing. An Animal Shelter usually is non profit or a government organization and relays on volunteers to feed and take care of the animals, keep their facilities clean and to work with the public. There are many national organizations known for volunteer work. The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, United Way, YMCA.
All these are great ways for you to get involved in your community but they are not the only way. Not everyone that needs help is helped through programs. You can help people with almost not effort. Here is a scenario. You have to take your child to a scout meeting. You have noticed a single mom down the road from you has a child that attends the same meeting. She has smaller children. You see it's a hassle for her to load up all her children to get her child to that meeting, and then has to sit outside in the parking lot for an hour while she waits for the meeting to end.
