Volunteer

All of this is done through the volunteers of the community. These are programs for the needy. .
There are volunteer opportunities in other areas too. Your local library might need someone to restock the shelves, or run the children's reading program. Also there may be a program where you can help someone learn to be rather it be a child or an adult. The local Senior citizen center is a good place to volunteer. They may have ways for you to provide friendship and community activities to the senior citizens. A childcare center would also benefit from a volunteer. If your community has a crisis nursery they depend on community support to keep them going. You could help with getting donations, supplies , or volunteers to help. Habitat For Humanity builds and gives houses to poor people in local communities. Volunteers not only help others but can learn a great deal about building houses by getting involved. The Special Olympics is an international organization that provides sports training and competition to children and adults with mental retardation. As a volunteer you can help with sports training, fund-raising, administrative help, competition planning and staffing. An Animal Shelter usually is non profit or a government organization and relays on volunteers to feed and take care of the animals, keep their facilities clean and to work with the public. There are many national organizations known for volunteer work. The American Red Cross, The Salvation Army, United Way, YMCA.
All these are great ways for you to get involved in your community but they are not the only way. Not everyone that needs help is helped through programs. You can help people with almost not effort. Here is a scenario. You have to take your child to a scout meeting. You have noticed a single mom down the road from you has a child that attends the same meeting. She has smaller children. You see it's a hassle for her to load up all her children to get her child to that meeting, and then has to sit outside in the parking lot for an hour while she waits for the meeting to end.
