On one side someone might say that if same sex marriage were legal, it would promote monogamy, stability and commitment. On the other hand, some one against the marriages would say that it would weaken or even destroy marriage because homosexuals are said to be more promiscuous. People all over the world have their own thoughts and ideas about gay marriage; but who is to tell you what you should believe. I think that this topic is so controversial because of the amount of the diversity in the United States. There are still families here that are very much involved with religion and are just now trying to cope with the idea of homosexuality, never mind marriage between them. Totally opposite to them are the liberals of the country. I am not saying that being open minded is a bad thing, but for many people it is hard for them to be so accepting. I would have to say that I am opposed same sex marriage. I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman and that is what is stated in the Bible. I am comfortable with homosexuality and I believe that they should be able to have civil unions but coming from a strong Catholic family, marriage is something that I can just not agree with. I think that a civil union is a great alternative for these people. The way that marriage is a sacred thing between a man and a woman could be compared to how civil unions are sacred to homosexuals.
There are plenty of people out there who believe that same sex marriages should be legalized. Those people bring out major points that do make sense and back up their opinions. There are many benefits in this society that are only available to married individuals. These benefits included things such as joint ownership and medical decision-making capacity. Marriage is more than a legal status. It affects many things in society such as tax filing status, joint ownership of property, insurance benefits, and agency law.
