Pollution and politics



             Now after the resignations of the directors of the Environmental Protection Agency and the Interior Department, the Union of Concerned Scientists, Democrats, and even some Republicans has again accused the Bush administration of "deliberate misuse of science and presidential malfeasance.".
             It is a shame that the major issues facing the entire human race only come to light in the U.S. during election years. Considering America is one of the largest polluters in the world and one of the most capable of reducing the effects of our modern lifestyle on the planet. Most of the environmental issues discussed in the report are of such magnitude that they do indeed affect the entire world. Soon it will no longer be conjecture and doomsday prophecy, as many industry leaders claim. Within our lifetime it may well prove to be undisputed, if not irreversible.
             There is a fine line, in our world today, between what we consider a quality of life and our environment, our earth, our home. The problems facing humankind today are so immense and have become so widespread that it can no longer be ignored. Most of these problems are associated with over population. The truth of the matter is there are so many people alive today and our life spans are so great that it is quickly becoming evident that the continued growth of the human race will one day reach a limit of which the Earth can support life.
             The "population bomb" as it was first termed in the early 1970s has been a controversial issue ever since. Even then, the government, business leaders, and scientists" were very much at odds. Up until that time science had been able to cope with many of the problems we were facing. Now, 30 years later, we still have not learned very much and we are still in denial.
             Early on, the greatest challenges humans faced were disease, famine, and infection. The world was and still is full of pestilence and disease. It was not until much later that advances in transportation and medicine would help sustain the population.
