Eveline

In James Joyce's story "Eveline" we read of a young women that is fighting with her inner feelings on whether to leave everything she has ever had or to elope with the possible man of her dreams. Eveline has taken over the motherly role in her family after the mother lost her life due to a terrible illness. She feels compelled to leave her family that she had helped care for and raise but for Frank she was willing to leave.
Elevene's relationship with her father since the passing of her mother had a large effect on her longing to leave and create a new life. Since her mother's passing, Eveline had taken over her mother's role that included more then just the cooking and the cleaning. Her mother had taken a lot of her father's abuse in the past and Eveline had escaped much of the problems of the family. But now, Eveline could not hide like in days past. She found herself becoming more afraid all the time. .
Eveline also felt excitement in the idea of starting a new life. Far away from her current troubled life. But with all of the excitement that would come from leaving she also felt the pressure of family obligations. She had willingly taken over her mothers responsibilities after her mother died and felt as though she was obligated to continue raising her mothers family instead of creating her own family. This feeling of guilt is what led Eveline to not board the ship with Frank who she so much loved. .
Although I can understand Eveline's point of view, I do not agree nor would I have made her decision to stay. In life it is important to fulfil obligations but at what cost. Personal happiness is essential to a healthy life. If she truly loved Frank, she should have made the sacrifice and left with him. Also with the fear for her personal safety is another reason to leave. Living in fear does not allow you to fully enjoy life and if your not enjoying life, life is useless.
