Oh Canada

True patriot love in all thy sons command. Why does this line appear on our national anthem? Why do we have a national anthem? Is it because we are not patriotic enough or maybe because we do not know our history? I don't think so. In "The Death of History Is Bunk", by Patrick Watson, he goes out and tries to tell his readers, that we Canadians are not patriotic enough. I believe Canadians are patriotic, but according to Mr. Watson in particular, we do not have that "American style" patriotism in us. .
             .
Canadians are not as patriotic as Americans. When you look down the street, you may see one or two Canadian flags hanging from people's homes, the entire opposite is true in the United States. Does this show Americans are truly more patriotic than Canadians? We both know who our first president/prime minister was, we both stand for our national anthems, we both learn about our histories, and we both know how many states/provinces the country has. So who's to say Americans are more patriotic than Canadians?.
In history courses at school, we learn all about the world wars, confederation, and other important events to Canadians. We have the choice of learning World history, Canadian history, and even American history, whereas Americans predominantly must take American history. Canadian students have a broader knowledge about global issues and history then American students. If this constitutes patriotism then Americans are more patriotic.
Canadians are patriotic. They do not have to know about details in history, they do not have to hang flags outside their houses, or recite all the presidents or prime ministers. I believe standing when hearing our national anthem is enough to be patriotic. After all, we stand for the American national anthem in respect, not as in the 2003 hockey playoffs where the New York fans booed the Canadian national anthem, and stand for all other anthems, such as in the Olympics.
