Relationships

Relationships are an important aspect of one's life. People can either benefit or suffer in life depending on the status of the relationship. Student and teacher relationships are one of the most important ones because there will always be this one relationship that tends to influence your life in a positive or negative matter. The short story "Soap and Water" by Yezierska, has a very good example on how a student benefited greatly because of her relationship with her professor. .
The narrator had suffered many years of her life because of financial problems. She had the hardest time paying for college and having enough to purchase ration. The narrator had basically given up in life after college. She would not be accepted for high paying positions because of her appearance. She had no one to go to or even talk to until just one thought about her freshman chemistry teacher gave her some light. The narrator remembered that "she gave me life, air, the unconscious emanation of her beautiful spirit" (Yezierska 919). This shows that the teacher had a very positive influence on the narrator because a single thought gave her happiness. . .
The narrator gained no respect from anyone in her surrounding. People just cared about appearance more than the emotion. The Dean of her college almost kept her from graduating because of her appearance. Then there was the chemistry teacher Miss Van Ness who actually cared about how the narrator was doing in life. The narrator thought that her only friends were the homeless and the abandoned cats and dogs. All the sudden one visit from Miss Van Ness healed her soul as shown in this example: "Here was one of the well-dressed, with a look in her eyes and a sound in her voice that was like healing oil over the bruises of my soul" (920). This always shows that the narrator must have had a positive influence on Miss Van Ness because the professor actually remembered the narrator after a time span of ten years.
