I thank you God

As the creator of all things natural, God is responsible for the "leaping greenly spirits of trees- and the "blue true dream of sky- that fascinate and enthrall the speaker. These phrases, found in the first stanza of the poem, show how Cummings uses diction, color symbolism, and imagery to relate to the idea of rebirth. The spirit of a group is the essential nature of that group, the basic feelings and ideas that it holds.Trees are one of the most basic symbols representing nature. Therefore, by thanking God for the "leaping greenly spirits of trees,"" the speaker is showing how much he appreciates the basic ideas and thoughts that nature represents. In literature the color green represents birth, life, and freshness. Therefore the speaker is using a metaphor in which the trees represent humans, or all of mankind.God is responsible for the small saplings that are just starting out in life just as much as he is responsible for allowing human beings to be reborn and experience a similar start of life. The color blue often represents freedom; in the same way that the expansive sky is wide open and limitless. The speaker thanks God for the "true blue dream of sky,"" but he is really thanking him for allowing people to have a second chance to see life as open and empty as the sky. Thus, this phrase is a metaphor which is stating that a new start on life is as pure, unmarked, and expansive as a cloudless sky. This metaphor is carried out further in the poem, for it also related to the wings mentioned in line eight. The speaker is saying that today is the birth of wings.Wings also represent freedom; the speaker now has the ability to fly without being restrained by previous life experiences or events. The speaker is thanking God for giving him wings and an open sky in the sense that he is now no longer limited in what he can experience. This newfound sense of freedom is why he finds his senses so heightened and amazing.
