The Case for God

I was approached by one of the students in this class this summer with the question, "How do we know there is a God?" So I thought that would be a good way to start off this class since I haven't seen some of you in a couple of years. How would you help answer the question, "How do we know there's a God?" Discussion .
             Spiritual Awareness/Awareness of God.
Let's start by asking this question: Why are humans aware of God? .
When you look at every culture throughout history, what is their one common denominator? All of them searched for a higher being (and we still do). If there is no such thing as God, if God is a big mistake, then the idea should never have existed; at least it should have been eliminated by evolution long ago. There is no rational explanation for this; but there is a rational explanation if there is a God. According to "God," we are all aware of Him because He made humans in His image and likeness by giving us a spiritual nature. With this spirit came our awareness of many things, one of which is our awareness of a higher authority, which in turn causes us to seek Him. .
In addition to our awareness of a higher being, our spirit also gives us our awareness of good and bad, of our mortality (foreknowledge of death), and of perfection (which has no meaning for humans since no human can ever achieve perfection). Another gift of the spirit we have is our "free will," which allows us to accept to reject this higher authority (God), but the lack of awareness of God is out of the question. .
             Mortality.
Let's discuss some of those other things I mentioned, like mortality. Why are we aware of our own mortality (that we are going to die someday)? Discussion. .
Does knowing we are going to die somehow better enable us to avoid death? No animal needs this knowledge to sharpen their survival instincts. Even for humans, if someone breaks into our house, doesn't our adrenaline kick in causing us to either get the heck out of there or protect ourselves? In fact the knowledge that we will die someday is more a negative than a positive.
