The Causes of Imperialism

Imperialism is the policy in which stronger nations attempt to control weaker territories. There are several reasons a country would wish to embark on an adventure in imperialism. The first of which is obtaining new markets and raw materials which would give a country economic power. Another reason is political and military competition between countries. A third is belief in racial/religious superiority. The United States was no exception to pursuing the imperial notion for these reasons. Though United States effort in imperialism was hypocritical due to its own past, it is justified because of the intention of these efforts in relation to the past, and in the examples of Hawaii and the present day.
When thinking about the birth of The United States of America, the American Revolution is remembered. American colonies were controlled by Great Britain, and the people rebelled. Colonists fought for an Independent society with their own government and rule. Hypocrisy is evident because America obviously wanted its independence, so why should America then be taking over other countries if it would be doing the same thing it fought against in its past. To justify imperialist actions, one must think of imperialism as a climbing a ladder of power. When America was weak it was controlled. As it gained power it became its own nation. Due to the large amount of power possessed afterwards by the United States at later points in its existence, it began to imperialize other weaker nations as Britain did to maintain and then grow control and power. The goal was always and will always be benefit itself, which is the true intention of imperialism.
Hawaii was a major imperialistic achievement for the US. It was an economic. military, and political success. Economically, Hawaii was valuable due to sugar plantations and the revenues that brought to the US. These white land owners who owned the plantations politically took over the government by forcing King Kalakaua to grant voting rights to these landowners only.
