Roman Mysticism

In Roman times there were no textbooks with answers to their many questions. So no one had factual explanations to questionable things. This is how the Roman's first started to spread their theories on: superstitions; omens; G-ds; the Sibylline Books; ghosts; necromancy; and oracles. What all these forms of mysticism have in common is that they were all used to explain unexplainable phenomenon and to foretell the future. .
             Superstitions.
In primitive societies, like the Romans, objects and living beings were believed to possess special spiritual properties. Many landscapes like: rocks; caves; lakes; swamps; rivers; mountains; and valleys were all believed to hold these properties. It was not just the landscape that they thought had the spiritual properties though but also animals and even furniture! Parents would tell stories to children as well explaining that bad behavior would result in being eaten by nasty creatures.(Ward 103-117) .
             Omens.
The Roman had a habit of interpreting natural phenomena as signs from the beyond. This belief was stemmed from the Etruscans. The Etruscans, developed omens and auspices into a form of science, they knew different many means of divination. They would seek to read the future by examining the entrails of sacrificial animals, the liver being of special importance for that purpose. Then they would observe lighting and interpret its meanings. There was a clear distinction made between omens reported by others and such which revealed themselves suddenly.
