True Reformation

Some years ago a German scholar came under a terrible attack for describing the poor condition of the church. His article was titled "The Babylonian Captivity". In it Martin Luther pointed out that the church had fallen so far away from truth that it had spiritually become Bablylon: Apostate! .
What would Luther have said if he had been born 500 years later and he had seen our Evangelical Church today? Would he have given thanks for our reverent worship, faithfulness to the truth, separation from the world or would he have pronounced our church Apostate? It's an important question to ask! Yet many find the question insulting because faithfulness involves the truth of God doctrine. .
Doctrine isn't very popular in our churches. You can almost hear the words of II Timothy 4:3 "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears." This morning I would like for us to consider the spiritual health of the evangelical church, as we look at ten symptoms of apostasy.
             1. The Bible How do we as evangelicals treat the Bible today? Well let's take a look at what the best and brightest of the Evangelical World are telling us! The New Bible Commentary Edited by our very own D.A. Carson says that Mark Chapter 16: 9-20 "cannot be said to be part of the Scriptures." You heard me! Mark Chapter 16: 9-20 Eleven verses! "cannot be said to be part of the Scriptures." The church, which proclaimed Mark 16 as the word of God for 1900 years, was lying! Do you really believe that? That God allowed it to be added to the Word of God for nearly two millennia and TODAY "we got it right?" Roman Catholicism is certainly guilty of trying to add to God's Word but we are even guiltier of trying to take it away. Mark 16:9-20 is unquestionably the infallible word of God. The historic Church of Irenaeus and Augustine got that one right and modern scholarship was and continues to be wrong.
